Haslingden High 6 v OLCC 3
The draw for the first round of the Lancashire Schools Cup took the OLCC Sixth Form team on a relatively long journey via the M65 to Haslingden in East Lancashire. Hopes were reasonably high after having trained the afternoon before and having a virtually full strength squad.
The game started well with OLCC moving the ball around with confidence and purpose and it wasn’t long before we made the first breakthrough, with Luke Capstick finishing off a move from close range to make the score 1-0.
The boys continued to play well and looked the likelier to add to their tally. However, the lead didn’t last long. Against the run of play, the hosts won a corner and, from it, used their height advantage to head the ball into the OLCC net to equalise. There was some debate as to whether Jack Taylor was fouled as the cross came over but the goal stood.
The goal clearly gave the home team confidence and they started to dominate play. Soon we found ourselves conceding again, 1-2. Despite having dominated early possession, our boys started to lose belief and, after 2 further goals were scored by Haslingden, we were relieved to hear the half-time whistle, with the score at 1-4.
The second half began brightly enough and we began to make more chances. When Jamie Townley calmly slotted home to make the score 2-4, there was some hope of a comeback.
This was dashed, however, as the home side again raised their game and scored another 2 goals. The lead would have been even greater had it not been for the heroics of Jack Taylor in goal. His multiple saves earned him his Man of the Match award.
The was a small piece of consolation for OLCC when Luke Capstick doubled his tally to make the score 2-6 but the hosts ran out worthy winners and progressed to the next round at our expense.
