Year 11 Football V Fulwood Academy (Lancashire Cup)
Match Report - Thursday 6th October
A test of mental character and focus!
Fulwood Academy under the leadership of Mr Moss was always going to be a tough outfit. We perhaps weren’t prepared for how tough.
Initial discussions during warm up were centred on how tall their goalkeeper was and how on earth we were going to score past him. Fortunately we found out early on with some attacking pressure that looks can be deceiving and we took the lead early on when Nathen Kernik put the ball in the back of the net. The lead didn’t last long though as Fullwood had a couple of attacks and soon equalised. The game continued to be a fairly even affair with both teams having equal share of the possession but only team being distinctly more vocal towards the referee. Not surprisingly we gained a free kick in a decent area which Nathen superbly dispatched into the roof of the net. The rest of the first half continued with both teams being evenly matched apart from the Fulwood indiscipline which was mounting and resulted in one of their players being substituted to try to calm things down. 2-1 to OLCC at half time
The second half wasn’t anywhere near as even unfortunately. Fulwood constantly pressed for the equalising goal with many last ditch clearances often just delaying the next attack rather than allowing us to gain any kind of hold on the game. Lewis Aldred organised the defence brilliantly and although the pressure was almost continuous Brandon Orris didn’t really have many saves to make even as the corner count began to rise towards double figures. With five minutes of normal time to go however and just as we were beginning to believe we could hold on Fulwood scored from a corner. In the last minute of full time almost we had a breakaway attack and from a terrific cross Tom Varey was unlucky to just put the ball over the bar. We were hoping we wouldn’t be made to pay for not taking that opportunity to finish off the Match. 2-2 at Full time
Extra time started like a completely different game. We were confident, we kept the ball better and Fulwood seemed to have lost some of their momentum. As a result we scored at the end of the first period with a pile driver from 30yrds by Brandon Carter which the goalkeeper couldn’t get anywhere near. At the beginning of the second period a well-made goal was finished off by Tom Varey lobbing the keeper to put us 4-2 up with 5 mins to go. By this time Fulwood were struggling to keep it all together but did score a penalty just before the final whistle was blown. Final Score OLCC 4 Fulwood Academy 3
This match certainly wasn’t for the faint hearted but just showed how if you focus on the task and work as a team anything is possible.
Team Performance 9/10
Nathan Kernik(2), Brandon Carter, Tom Varey.
MEN of the Match
Nathan Kernik for his two well executed goals and Brandon Carter for a moment of sheer brilliance – let’s hope we don’t have to wait 5 years before we see it again.
