What we teach

Gifted and Talented

Provision for Able, Gifted & Talented at Our Lady’s Catholic College

At Our Lady’s Catholic College we recognise that our Able, Gifted and Talented students need access to broad, balanced and challenging curriculum opportunities to enable them to reach their true potential. We achieve this by offering a curriculum that extends and enriches their learning and promotes high aspirations, attainment and good progress.

In addition there is a wide range of extra-curricular activities available to our Able, Gifted and Talented pupils. These include trips to the theatre and art galleries, a school choir that performs at, among others, the school prize giving, advent carol service and a charity concert. Dance and drama students have the opportunity to become involved in the dance show and school production. Art students have the opportunity to work towards the Arts Award.

  • Able students are identified by Key Stage 2 SATS results and will have achieved a minimum of level 5 in both English and Maths.

  • A ‘Gifted’ student has abilities in one or more academic subjects: Maths, English, Science, History, Geography, RE, MFL or ICT

  • A ‘Talented’ student has particular abilities in one or more creative subjects: PE, Music, Dance, Drama, Technology or Art.

  • Other qualities such as leadership, decision making and critical/creative thinking are also taken into account when identifying gifted and talented students

Each Department has their own criteria to nominate students in that subject.  Nominations provide a regular update into which subject a student has a particularly high ability in. Students will then be offered specific enrichment opportunities in those subjects.

If your son / daughter is involved in activities outside of school which you feel may entitle them to be on the Gifted or Talented register then please do let us know.
